Welcome to Pebblebed Heaths National Nature Reserve

The Pebblebed Heaths NNR is the largest area of lowland heath remaining in Devon. This unique landscape has been shaped by the underlying Triassic geology and people living and working with nature for thousands of years. Known locally as ‘The Common’, the Pebblebed Heaths cover more than ten square kilometres.

Open access

The Pebblebed Heaths are Open Access Land for walkers, with additional permission allowing cyclists and horse riders to enjoy most of the area too.

Castles & Dragons

Discover castles and dragons on this self led trail in the heart of the Pebblebed Heaths National Nature Reserve starting at Four Firs. 3km trail with a 1km optional extension, follows rough tracks with some slopes and steps.

Smugglers & Goat Suckers

Tales from Mutter’s Moor, an outlier from the main block of the Pebblebed Heaths near to Sidmouth. Follows rough tracks with some gentle slopes.
